William Welch, born on May 6, 1817, came to Van Wie’s Point in 1836 from Saratoga County. William had many occupations throughout his life. In census records, he was listed as a farmer, carpenter, boatman, and working on a dredging machine before his official occupation as a lamplighter. (Courtesy of Al Weaver)
