In 1845, artists William Wade and William Croome published their Panorama of the Hudson River as a guide for travelers. Both sides are shown from the perspective of a person sailing up the middle of the Hudson River. Van Wie’s Point dyke is visible, drawn as a bar across the fold of the paper. This map was drawn before the light was erected but gives a good sense of the topography of the area. (Albany Institute of History and Art)
