Photo Caption:

Vintage post card showing the Wassaumkeag Hotel that once stood next to Fort Point Lighthouse. The hotel did not last long. Built in 1895, it burned to the ground in 1898. It was the largest resort hotel in the area. It was rumored that the jewels of many of its wealthy guests were lost in the fire. Arthur Curtis, grandson of lighthouse keeper Arthur Mitchell, said they he would often explore the site of the former hotel in search of jewels, but he never found any. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
