David S. Simonson was the head keeper at Wisconsin Point Lighthouse who was instrumental in rescuing the two Coastguardsmen from the lighthouse on November 29, 1960. He joined the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1936 as a mate on a buoy tender. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the U.S. Coast Reserves and served in the South Pacific. He served as the keeper of the Wisconsin Point Lighthouse from 1951 until his retirement in 1965. Born on October 20, 1901, David S. Simonson died on January 31, 1981 and was interned at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior, Wisconsin. (Photo courtesy Mary E. Simonson Miller.)
