This 1928 photo of Eugene and Viola Hayward, Orlo’s parents, was taken while Eugene was a keeper at Oregon’s Cape Blanco Lighthouse. He also served at Heceta Head, Yaquina Head, and perhaps even at New Dungeness for a time, according to Orlo’s letter. After serving at least ten years as a keeper, Eugene finished his lighthouse service career at the Astoria, Oregon Lighthouse Depot up to his retirement. (Courtesy Jean Hayward Wilkinson)
