Captain Charles R. Monteiro (1897-1973) began his 25-year career in the United States Lighthouse Service in 1933 as an engineer. When the Service was consolidated with the Coast Guard in 1939, he accepted a commission as a lieutenant. He was stationed in Sault St. Marie and Detroit, MI; Duluth, MN; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Washington D.C.; and New Orleans, LA where he finally retired in 1958 as Chief Engineer in the 8th District with the rank of Captain.
