Monteiro (1865 – 1929) stands front center at the Lighthouse Superintendents Conference in Washington, DC in 1929 with the Commissioner of Lighthouses, George Putnam second to the right. Captain Monteiro served on the United States Lighthouse Service tenders Verbena, Azalea, Mayflower, Ivy, Arbutus, and Orchid for a total of 39 years before becoming the 9th Lighthouse District Superintendent in Puerto Rico in 1926. It was while on a strenuous district inspection trip that he suffered a heart attack and passed away in Colon, Panama in 1929 just three months prior to his planned retirement.
