(l-r) Daughter Velora, Mrs. Nettie Beal, lighthouse keeper Vinal Beal, daughter Virginia, and son Harvard. Standing in the front is daughter Robena “Beanie” Beal. Later in life, Vinal’s son Harvard, would row to Cranberry Island to court his future wife, Elva Spurling Beal. He later recalled that, depending on the wind, it would take him six to eight hours, one way, to make the trip. However, he did rig some type of sail on the peapod, which sometimes, if the wind was right, helped make the trip slightly shorter and easier. (Photo courtesy Vicki Salisbury.)
