Orlo Hayward sits looking disinterested in the transport cart that has been rigged to resemble a car while Walter Lawrence (l) and Howard Hansen (r) give it the “pit-stop” treatment. Notice the kitchen chair as the driver seat, the kerosene crate holding up the “steering wheel” with some kerosene next to it to represent gas, a lantern for the headlight, a clock for the speedometer, and Hansen working on the supposed engine with a large hand tool. Robert Gerlof, in his letter to Orlo Hayward seven years later, recollects the fun they had with the car on “Broadway” at Tillamook. (Courtesy of Jean Hayward Wilkinson.)
