There were only two ways to transport people up to the lighthouse - by basket or breeches buoy from the boat. While normally adept at operating the derrick and boom, a savvy keeper could “accidentally” drag a victim in the basket through the surf and blame it on the line slipping, wind kicking up, or a jump of ocean waves. The keepers reportedly used this excuse to give a particular Lighthouse Inspector a bath who they didn’t like very much. The basket could carry up to four, riding up, which is the number shown here. It must have been some type of official visit, because many of the men pictured are in suit and tie. (Courtesy of Brian Bay.)
