Chief Steven Ruh, U.S. Coast Guard, places a U.S. Life-Saving Service marker at the gravesite of Ira E. Scovill (1863-1930) who was a surfman and keeper of the Quoddy Head Life Saving Service Station in Lubec, Maine. His daughter, Connie, married lighthouse keeper Elson Small. Later in life, Connie Small (1901-2005), who became known as “Maine’s First Lady of Light,” wrote the best-selling book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife. (In 1915 the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life Saving Service were merged to create the U.S. Coast Guard, and in 1939, the U.S. Lighthouse Service was dissolved and its duties were taken over by the United States Coast Guard.)
