Coast Guard keeper Leo L. Whaley II and his wife Shirley arriving at Anacapa Island Lighthouse from the hospital with their newborn son, Leo L. Whaley III, on September 4, 1956. They rode up from the dock in the cargo box suspended from the boom on the upper landing. Whaley looks at the lower landing, 120 feet below, while Shirley balances herself with her hand on Whaley’s knee. Hoisting a family in a small bucket such as this to the top of the island would never be allowed with all of the OSHA regulations in place today. However, in those days, they thought nothing of it.
