The launch boat shown here would be hooked onto a cable and hoisted up with the lower of the two booms to a platform. In these 1956 images, Dave Hickey holds the suspended Coast Guard boat against the dock while Don Simpson, left, and Jerry Dauster, disembark. The empty boat was then stowed on a landing above the dock. One Coast Guard keeper arrived with his wife, only to have the launch boat stuck, swinging in the air, as the derrick stopped working in mid-operation. As the Coastguardsman and his terrified wife dangled over the swells in the landing cove, they thought for sure that they would lose their lives. The crew operating the derrick franticly repaired the derrick. Finally the couple made it to the island; however the wife vowed to never to ride the derrick again. In fact she refused to leave the island for any leaves and stayed there until their tour of duty was over. (James W. Baker collection, Lighthouse Digest archives.)
