Volunteers installing a new spike on the turntable for the old tramway at Thancher Island Lighthouse. The old tramway was a network of railroad tracks and trestles used to haul coal and supplies up from the lighthouse tenders at the boat ramp to the whistle house (fog signal building). The turntable was used to turn the carts to go to the keeper’s house. Not many lighthouses had a system like this. It was built in the 1889s and discontinued in the 1930s when the lighthouses were electrified.
