Devil’s Island Lighthouse as it appears today. At some point, the Canadian Coast Guard, for reasons unknown, unceremoniously toppled the old lantern room to the ground and left it to there in pieces to decay and rust away. At that time a fiberglass deck replaced the original deck and a solar powered lens was mounted. The Canadian Coast Guard has no plans to restore the tower, which is again in a serious state of disrepair. In fact, it is understood that they intend to discontinue the light as an aid to navigation. In December 2008, a new group, the Devil’s Island Light Society, was formed with hopes to save the lighthouse. They have requested that the lighthouse be included for restoration funds under Canada’s (new) Lighthouse Protection Act in 2010, which may or may not happen.
