This lighthouse was designed by engineer David Stevenson. It was the last of the Northern Lighthouse Board's lighthouses to be automated. Tower Height: 121 Height of Focal Plane: 171 Characteristic and Range: Flashing white every 5 seconds, visible for 25 nautical miles. Description of Tower: Conical red brick tower.

Date Established: 1862 Date Present Tower Built: 1862 Date Automated: 1998 Fog Signal: The original foghorn was operated by compressed air and was decommissioned and demolished in the early 1980s. Its replacement was discontinued in 1995 (was 2 blasts every 30 seconds). Current Use: Active aid to navigation. Directions:
To reach the Isle of Lewis, flights to/from Barra, Benbecula, Inverness, Glasgow, London and other destinations operate regularly.
