On a chilly day this past October, Dave Waldrip and Harry Duvall of the United States Coast Guard met at Maine’s White Head Light Station with Ben Swan of the Pine Island Camp and Dave Gamage to plan for the location of the solar panels as part of the conversion process of the light and sound signal to solar power next year. While Swan and Waldrip discussed matters concerning lighthouse preservation, Duvall and Gamage busied themselves with tape measure, sun elevations and azimuths, and options for conduit placement. A proposed site for the solar panels was selected that will have reduced visual impact on the historic character of the light station than was previously selected.
