All that remains of the Dutch Island Lighthouse ...

Located near Jamestown, Rhode Island on Narragansett Bay the small neglected Dutch Island Lighthouse is in near ruins, but members of the American Lighthouse Foundation think they will be able to save it.

Not much remains of the Dutch Island Light Station, which was built in 1926 and automated way back in 1947. Shortly after automation, the keeper’s house, which was once lived in by a keeper who was a Revolutionary War veteran, was torn down.

In 1962, the Coast Guard deeded the lighthouse grounds, with the exception of the tower and an easement, to the State of Rhode Island for use as a wildlife sanctuary.

In 1979 vandals were successful in severely damaging the light in the tower beyond repair and it was never relit.

If you would like to join the Dutch Island Lighthouse Society or send a donation for its restoration contact: Dutch Island Lighthouse Society, P.O. Box 435, Saunderstown, RI 02874.
