This dramatic image was drawn by artist J.O. Davidson for the September 1888 edition of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. Titled, “A Present For The Keeper,” it shows a crew of locals battling high seas and howling bitter cold wind while desperately trying to deliver a gift basket, with all the fixin’s for a holiday dinner, to a lighthouse keeper and his family at a wave-swept caisson lighthouse. At some point, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper changed its name to Leslie’s Weekly. In the late 1800s and through the early 1900s, it was one of the most popular publications of its type in the United States. Its operations ceased in 1922.
