During a small ceremony held on August 20, 2020 on behalf of the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, Greg Krawczyk placed a U.S. Coast Guard Lighthouse Keeper Memorial Marker at the gravesite of George Henry Leikam, Sr. in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
George H. Leikam, Sr. was already a Coast Guard veteran by the time he was appointed assistant keeper in 1942 at the no longer standing Holland Island Bar Lighthouse in Maryland. In 1943, he was promoted to head keeper, a position he held until 1945 when he was transferred as the head keeper of Maryland’s Hooper Strait Lighthouse where he served until the lighthouse was completely automated in 1954.
George H. Leikam, Sr. then became the head keeper at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse off the coast of Annapolis, Maryland where he served until his untimely death at the age of 57 on February 3, 1960 while on duty at the lighthouse.
