Shortly after publication of this issue of Lighthouse Digest, the massive makeover restoration at Ohio’s 1821 Marblehead Lighthouse will have been completed and the scaffolding will have come down.
The current project included removing and replacing some of the original limestone, tuck-pointing the brick, and repainting the entire tower as well as the red trim. The cost of the $200,000 project was paid for by the State of Ohio, Department of Parks and Watercraft.
Additionally, the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society has partnered with the State to construct a new restroom building and add 66 more paved parking spaces. That project is scheduled to be completed in the early summer of 2020 and will cost about $350,000, with the Historical Society contracting for the sewer line extension and the building itself. That will amount to them paying for about 2/3 of the project cost. They are trying to get everything done and spruced up for the 200th birthday of the lighthouse in 2021.
This past summer season at Marblehead Lighthouse saw nearly 25,000 visitors climb the lighthouse in the 101 days that they were open from noon to 4 pm. This past season, they had over 80 people volunteer to help operate the park at the lighthouse.
The Marblehead Lighthouse is located on Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie in Marblehead, Ohio. Sometimes it has also been referred to as the Sandusky Bay Lighthouse.
