On page 55 of the July/August edition of Lighthouse Digest, we asked for the public’s help to identify the name and location of the old photo that shows a number of people, including those in an automobile, who braved a trip over the ice to this off-shore lighthouse.

Thanks to Lighthouse Digest subscriber Steve Wright, we have been able to verify that the old image of the people on the ice was taken at the Great Beds Lighthouse, shown here in the other historic photo, which is located in the Raritan Bay at the mouth of the Raritan River near South Amboy, New Jersey.

Built in 1880, the Great Beds Lighthouse was automated way back in 1945 when its keepers were removed. In 2011, the government sold the Great Beds Lighthouse for $90,000 to a private individual.
