Thanks to funds raised by the sale of Michigan’s automobile lighthouse license plates, the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program has awarded grant money to three more of that state’s historic lighthouses.
The 1935 North Manitou Shoal Lighthouse will receive $40,000 to hire a consultant to produce a Historic Structure report to assist with the full rehabilitation of the lighthouse that sits out in Lake Michigan near Manitou Passage.
The Township of Grosse Ile will also receive $40,000 to do some major repairs to the 1906 Grosse Ile North Channel Front Range Lighthouse that will include replacement of deteriorated exterior wood, rehabilitation of four windows, and do repair to damaged interior features. The lighthouse suffered ice damaged from this past season’s winter.
The Keweenaw County Historical Society is getting $33,000 for work to be done on the 1871 Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. The money will be used to hire contractors to replace or restore 12 double-hung windows and restore two original casement windows in the tower, and install 13 new storm windows.
To date, though the sales of the Michigan Lighthouse License Plate the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance program has awarded $2.2 million in grants for lighthouse preservation.
