When visiting the Whale Harbor Restaurant in Islamorda, Florida for the first time, some people might think that Cape Cod’s Nauset Lighthouse has been moved again, but this time all the way from Massachusetts. However, it’s not the real Nauset Light, but it is a near duplicate that was built by Larry Herlth, who is better known as Lighthouse Larry.
Lighthouse Larry, a former Coast Guardsman, is no stranger to building exquisitely detailed models of actual lighthouses, many which adorn numerous businesses. In fact, his models of the skeletal towers of the Florida Keys are so detailed that, from a distance, or in photographs, they look like the real thing.
Over the years, Lighthouse Larry has been working hard to draw the public’s attention to saving lighthouses and their history. As part of that effort, in 2012, when he was 52 years old, he swam five hours and eleven minutes to make a round trip swim to Florida’s Alligator Reef Lighthouse.
