Eastport, Maine native Kenneth N. Stuart was recently honored with the prestigious United States Coast Guard’s George R. Putnam Inspirational Leadership Award. The award is named in honor of George R. Putnam (1865-1953), who served from 1910 to 1935 as the first Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Lighthouses, more commonly known as the U.S. Lighthouse Service. (In 1939, the Lighthouse Service was taken over by the Coast Guard.)

Kenneth Stuart, currently the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England’s Lead Command Center Controller, has a distinguished 34 year Coast Guard career. He joined the Coast Guard in 1983 and rose through the ranks from seaman to Senior Chief and eventually commanded the Coast Guard Cutter Shackle. He retired as a military person from the Coast Guard in 2004, but immediately became a civilian employee of the Coast Guard as the Lead Command Center Controller.
