Ohio’s Port Clinton Lighthouse, minus its lantern room, seems to be in limbo as recent talks about where the lighthouse should be relocated were stalled.
Built in the late 1800s, the structure was once an important aid to navigation until it was discontinued. In 1964 it was purchased by Brands Drydock Marina where it stood for many years.
In 2011 the Port Clinton City Council voted to accept ownership of the lighthouse, and it was moved from the marina. However, Mr. Brand wanted assurances that the lighthouse would be placed at Water Works Park in Port Clinton and that ownership would revert back to him if the structure were ever moved. However, the city wanted to keep its options open.
The lantern was removed from the lighthouse by the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy so that it could be restored. So far, the group has raised about half of the $30,000 it says it needs for the restoration. Hopefully the lighthouse will soon have a new, permanent home.
