An amazing replica of Ontario's 1885 Big Tub Lighthouse is now on display at the Vaughan Mills Shopping Mall in Vaughn, Ontario, Canada, which is about 20 miles from downtown Toronto.
It all started when the mall staff approached Bruce County Tourism officials with the idea of a display that would help promote the area and the building of the lighthouse was the end result.
Chris Hughes, Manager of Tourism for Bruce County worked out a partnership with the South Hampton Marine Heritage Society to build the replica, which was built by volunteers for a cost of about $10,000.00. The replica was built using the blueprint drawings of the actual lighthouse.
The replica with its fully functional light in the tower is now on display at the mall and includes interpretive panels that tell the story of the lighthouses of Bruce County. The photos here show the replica under construction and then being transported and finally put into place at the Vaughan Mall. To learn more about their lighthouses you can visit their web site at www.BruceCoastLight-houses.com.
