Sometime between 1936 and 1939, while stationed at Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon, lighthouse keeper Ray Dunson was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. To enable him to get the proper medical treatments, he requested a transfer to be closer to a hospital in Seattle, Washington. Sadly, the beautiful keeper’s house shown here was demolished in 1984, leaving a major void in America’s lighthouse heritage. In 2006 the lighthouse tower underwent a major restoration.
