Crewmember of the Gull Shoal Lifesaving Station, Rasmus S. Midgett, was awarded a gold Lifesaving Medal for his rescue performed on this day in 1899. Surfman Midgett single handedly saved the lives of 10 persons off the barkentine Priscilla. He swam into the raging surf and pulled them to safety one at a time. This replica of a gold Lifesaving Medal is on display at the NC Maritime Museum at Beaufort. (Courtesy North Carolina Maritime Museum, Beaufort)
