In this 1917 photograph, lighthouse keeper Charles Whitford’s wife, Annie, is shown on the lower deck of Sabin Point Lighthouse in Rhode Island. One of their daughters is seen standing on the landing pier of the lighthouse. Notice the outer stairway, in the left of the photo, that led up to the platform where the fog bell was. It was this fog bell that rang out the sounds of jubilation at the end of the wedding ceremony for Charles Whitford’s daughter Myrtle’s wedding. Myrtle’s wedding was not the only one to take place at the lighthouse; her sister Lillian was also married there. Editor’s Note: Early government records had the lighthouse with the spelling of Sabine, but in later years the letter ‘e’ was dropped for the spelling of Sabin. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
