Photo Caption:

The main 95-foot-tall light on Pladda Island was built by Thomas Smith, chief engineer of the Northern Lighthouse Trust (Board) in 1790. A second light, 20 feet below the original one, was added in 1800 by Thomas Smith’s apprentice, his step-son Robert Stevenson, to help distinguish the light further from other lights in the area.
