Astoria socialite Gertrude Upshur was voted Queen of the Astoria Centennial Pageants in 1911 and the most beautiful woman of the city according to her peers. Newspapers claimed she leaned toward “domestic life rather than to athletics,” though that certainly wasn’t the case on her visit to Tillamook Rock Lighthouse as she rode the box up to the Rock in June of 1905 on her Dixie Girls Club outing.
