The earliest known photo of visitors on the gallery deck at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, (circa 1910), shows how little safety the railing provided. This was not an issue during the 19th century when the lighthouse was isolated and visitors were rare, but by the 1920s, the proximity to U.S. Highway 1 and the Palm Beaches made Jupiter Inlet one of the most visited lighthouses in the southeast. Note the attire of the visitors; today, barefoot climbers are prohibited and very few visitors make the climb wearing a tie! (LRHS Maurice E. Holley Collection)
