This press photo from 1940 shows the post-1917 railing featuring balusters, kneebar, and base-rail. This is also a good view of the bird-screen that protected the lantern from about 1910 to 1941. As was common with many larger southeastern lighthouses, the light seemed to disorient flocks of ducks and other migrating birds, causing them to collide with the lantern.
