Photo Caption:

James Rankin, the longest serving keeper at Fort Point Lighthouse, retired from the U. S. Lighthouse Service on February 28, 1919 and moved to Antioch, California, where he died at the age of 77 on January 5, 1921. He was buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery. Notice that the pin on his hat is a brass lighthouse with a crossed spar buoy and whistling buoy, which was adopted in 1884 and in later years was replaced with an embroidered patch.
