Photo Caption:

Vintage photo of Wisconsin’s 1881 Sand Island Lighthouse when it was still a staffed station. Look closely and you will see a man, presumably the keeper, and a child standing in front of the lighthouse. Sand Island Lighthouse only had two keepers in its history: Charles Lederle from 1881 to 1892, and Emmanuel Luick from 1892 to 1921, when the lighthouse was automated. During that time, sixteen different people served as assistant keepers. In 1925. Gertrude Wellisch obtained a long-term lease on the lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
