Photo Caption:

Albert Martin Horte served for eight years as a lighthouse keeper, starting at Boston Harbor Light for just a few months before being promoted to head keeper at Marblehead Lighthouse in 1892. By 1893, he was back on Boston Light as head keeper for one year until he transferred to Highland Lighthouse, where he remained as 1st assistant for six years until finishing service in 1900. Shown here with his wife, Ellen, it was Albert’s sister, Josephine, who married keeper Wesley A. Pingree. It was said that Wesley helped Albert get his first job as a keeper. Albert had been injured working in a granite quarry and lighthouse keeping was deemed less dangerous of a profession.
