LeRoy White, the eldest son of lighthouse keeper, Walter White, was born in San Francisco on April 13, 1910. Walter was working on finishing the Point Cabrillo Light Station at the time as an engineer. As LeRoy later wrote about his father, “. . . he joined the USLHS as one of its lighthouse keepers where he was sent to Piedras Blancas Light Station. I was three years old then, and from that point on until 1938, I spent in and around light stations.” From ages seven to ten, LeRoy boarded with other families to attend school, but lived at the lighthouses when Walter transferred to Point Montara Light in 1920, and later at Point Hueneme Light in 1927. He is shown here on the steps of Point Montara Lighthouse in 1922 with his two sisters, Beatrice, age eight, and LaVerne, age one. His nine-year-old brother, Richard, had died from diphtheria some months before. (Courtesy of Betty Westby)
