This vintage photo of New Point Comfort Lighthouse shows what was once a large island, which has since eroded away. In 1919, when the lighthouse was automated and downgraded, the keeper position was abolished and a lamplighter, Henry L. Dow, was assigned to the maintain the beacon. At that time, the keeper’s house was sold to a private individual, torn down and its wood was reportedly used to build a new house on the mainland. In 1963, the light in the tower was discontinued and replaced by an offshore buoy. In 1968 the Coast Guard abandoned the tower and the structure soon suffered from neglect and vandalism. Vandals even stole a brass plaque that was installed in the tower in 1961 as a memorial to local residents who had lost their lives at sea. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
