The real Captain Moses M. Haskell was born in 1804 in New Gloucester, Maine, where he served at nearby Seguin Island Lighthouse from 1844 to at least 1847 as head keeper. The inscription on his tombstone reads, “In memory of MOSES M. son of/Jabez & Nabby Haskell who died June 12, 1849 AE. 44Yrs 3 mos.” Captain Haskell was a farmer when he wasn’t a lighthouse keeper.
