Thousands of people were ferried out to the lighthouse dock at Goat Island to sit on the adjacent hillside to watch the Great White Fleet’s arrival on May 6, 1908. No wonder the newspapers noted that such areas appeared black in color with “a mass of seething humanity.” This photo was taken by keeper John Kofod’s wife, Meta, probably from the Yerba Buena Lighthouse dwelling.
