Built in 1873 at a cost of $83,000, the Alligator Reef Lighthouse was the most expensive built of Florida’s Reef Lighthouses. In today’s equivalent, the cost would be close to $2 million. The lighthouse originally had a 1st order Fresnel lens, the largest and most expensive of all lenses. Alligator Reef Lighthouse was automated in 1963 and its last keepers were removed.
