Photo Caption:

The second Solomons Lump Lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay near Crisfield, Maryland where Lorenzo Dow Evans was the keeper from 1895 to 1900. He previously served at the first Solomons Lump Lighthouse from 1879 to 1893 when it was destroyed by ice. In 1929, while burning off paint that was covering rotten wood, keeper Henry C. Sterling accidentally set the lighthouse on fire. Thanks to a handy fire extinguisher, he was able to save the lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
