Tillamook Rock Lighthouse owner, Max Shillock, climbs the stairs to inspect the lighthouse on July 2, 1978 from the cement pad where the helicopter landed. The landing area was used during the lighthouse’s operational days as the place where supplies were hoisted from the cargo boats to the Rock by means of a derrick and boom. Neither the landing pad nor derrick assembly are there now, having been swept clean by the winter storms long ago. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
