In August of 1980, thieves broke through the iron fence surrounding the property and made a daring night-time raid on the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse. They stole two of the 90-pound-plus lens panels from its historic mid-1800s Fresnel lens. Chief Warrant Officer John Powers of the U. S. Coast Guard is shown here shortly after the break-in, examining the damage. He said, “The thieves most likely stole it for its brass fixtures,” which at the time, were worth about $100 per pound. It was later announced that the Coast Guard had found replacement sections for the lens from an old lighthouse and that they would be installed as soon as they were able to figure out a way to properly secure the lighthouse from further break-ins.
