Humboldt Bay Group Commander William Hughes presents EN2 James P. Walters with the Coast Guard Medal for heroism during the rescue of a woman trapped in the hull of an overturned Cabin Cruiser near Humboldt Bay in 1964. Both men were directly involved in the burning of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse buildings in 1962. James Walters also spent time as a light keeper at Lincoln Rock Lighthouse in Alaska and serviced the Battery Point Lighthouse in California during the course of his ten-year Coast Guard career from 1956 to 1966.
