Things would wash up occasionally near the deck at Bergen Point Lighthouse. Hans Beuthe wrote to his son Teddy about a string of 22 frankfurters that came floating by one day. He found that they were still good and fed them to Nikki the dog, who thought “it was his birthday, oh, boy don’t he like frankster’s in the hand, anybody that goes near the cellar door yesterday was promptly grabbed by the foot and given to understand in no uncertain way that them were HIS!” (Courtesy Hilda “Sugar” Ziemba)
