Forrest S. Cowan was born on September 7, 1888 in Douglas County, Oregon. He was the eldest son of Cape Flattery head keeper John M. Cowan and served as his father’s assistant for three years prior to the tragedy that took his life on February 18, 1911. He was only 22 years old when he drowned. This old newspaper clipping, showing him in his light keeper uniform, is the only known photograph of him as an adult. (Courtesy Heather W. Bowers)
