The first Kanahena Light, established around 1884, used two ordinary “kitchen lamps” displayed from a trestle tower 40’ high with a pyramidal room atop. In 1904, when the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment took over, the intensity of the light was upgraded to a lens lantern which could be seen 10 miles out to sea and in 1905, the light was hoisted atop a 35’ mast, as is shown in this photo.
