Designed by famous lighthouse engineer Isaiah William Penn Lewis, the Sand Key Lighthouse stands seven miles southwest of Key West, Florida. The 120-foot-tall tower was built to replace a lightship that had been stationed at the site from 1846 to 1853, which had replaced an 1827 lighthouse that had been destroyed in a hurricane in 1846, killing its female keeper and five others.
